Foreign Body Removal

Foreign body removal

Foreign body removal refers to the process of extracting objects that have been ingested and become lodged within the digestive tract. This can include items accidentally swallowed, such as food particles, coins, small toys, or other objects. In some cases, foreign bodies can cause symptoms like pain, discomfort, difficulty swallowing, or even more serious complications like perforation of the GI tract.

Indications for Foreign Body Removal

At Sandozi Health, foreign body removal may be necessary in cases involving:

  • Accidental Ingestion: Children or adults who have swallowed objects unintentionally.
  • Esophageal Impaction: When objects get stuck in the esophagus (food pipe), causing obstruction or discomfort.
  • Stomach or Intestinal Obstruction: Objects that have passed into the stomach or intestines and caused blockage or pain.
  • Endoscopic Retrieval: Objects that are visible through endoscopic examination and require safe removal to prevent complications.
  • Evaluation: Our gastroenterologists will conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include imaging studies (X-rays or CT scans) to locate and assess the position of the foreign object.
  • Preparation: Depending on the size and location of the object, patients may need to fast or undergo bowel preparation to facilitate safe removal.
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia or sedation is often administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.

During the foreign body removal:

  • Endoscopic Retrieval: Using a flexible endoscope equipped with specialized tools, our gastroenterologists carefully navigate through the digestive tract to locate and grasp the foreign object.
  • Extraction: Once the object is located, it is gently grasped and removed through the endoscope. In some cases, tools such as forceps, snares, or retrieval baskets may be used to safely extract the object.
  • Post-Removal Care: After the procedure, patients are monitored for any immediate complications and provided with instructions for post-procedure care and follow-up.
