ERCP

ERCP

ERCP is a specialized endoscopic procedure that combines endoscopy and X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile ducts and pancreas. It allows our specialists to visualize these structures and perform various therapeutic interventions directly through the endoscope.

Indications for ERCP

ERCP may be recommended for patients presenting with the following conditions:

  • Biliary Disorders: Such as gallstones in the bile duct (choledocholithiasis), strictures, and infections.
  • Pancreatic Disorders: Including pancreatitis, pancreatic duct stones, and pancreatic pseudocysts.
  • Jaundice: When caused by obstruction in the bile ducts.
  • Evaluation of Abnormal Imaging Findings: When abnormalities are detected in imaging studies like ultrasound or CT scan.
  • Preoperative Assessment: To evaluate the anatomy of the bile ducts and pancreas prior to certain surgeries.

Procedure Overview

Before the ERCP procedure:

  • Preparation: Patients may need to fast for several hours to ensure the stomach and duodenum are empty.
  • Anesthesia: Sedation or general anesthesia may be administered to ensure comfort during the procedure.

During the ERCP:

  • Insertion of Endoscope: A flexible endoscope is gently inserted through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the duodenum.
  • Contrast Injection and Imaging: A contrast dye is injected into the bile ducts or pancreatic duct, followed by X-ray imaging to visualize the structures and identify any abnormalities.
  • Therapeutic Interventions: If abnormalities such as gallstones or strictures are identified, our specialists can perform interventions such as:
    • Stone Removal: Using specialized instruments to extract stones from the bile ducts or pancreatic duct.
    • Stent Placement: Inserting a stent to relieve bile duct or pancreatic duct obstruction and improve drainage.
    • Balloon Dilation: Dilating narrow segments of the bile duct or pancreatic duct to improve flow.
    • Biopsy: Collecting tissue samples for further examination, if necessary.
