PEG Tube Placement

PEG Tube Placement

PEG tube placement is a procedure used to insert a feeding tube directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall. This tube allows for long-term enteral nutrition and hydration for patients who are unable to eat or swallow adequately due to various medical conditions.

Indications for PEG Tube Placement

At Sandozi Health, PEG tube placement may be recommended for patients with the following conditions:

  • Swallowing Difficulties: Such as dysphagia caused by neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, Parkinson’s disease), head and neck cancer, or esophageal disorders.
  • Chronic Conditions: Such as severe malnutrition, neurodegenerative diseases, or conditions requiring prolonged nutritional support.
  • Post-Surgical Support: For patients unable to tolerate oral feeding temporarily after surgery.

Procedure Overview

Before the PEG tube placement procedure:

  • Evaluation: Our gastroenterologists will conduct a thorough evaluation of the patient’s medical history and current condition to determine the need for PEG tube placement.
  • Consent and Preparation: Patients and their caregivers will receive detailed information about the procedure, its benefits, risks, and what to expect during and after the insertion.
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia and sedation are typically administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.

During the PEG tube placement:

  • Endoscopic Guidance: A flexible endoscope with a camera is used to visualize the inside of the stomach and guide the insertion of the PEG tube.
  • Stomach Puncture: Under endoscopic guidance, a small incision is made in the abdominal wall, and a tube is inserted through this incision directly into the stomach.
  • Securing the Tube: Once in place, the external end of the PEG tube is secured to the abdominal wall to prevent displacement.
  • Post-Procedure Care: After the procedure, patients receive instructions on how to care for the PEG tube, including feeding techniques, tube maintenance, and potential complications to watch for.
