Variceal Band Ligation

Variceal Band Ligation

Variceal band ligation is an endoscopic treatment aimed at controlling bleeding from esophageal varices. These varices are enlarged veins in the esophagus that can rupture and cause severe, life-threatening bleeding due to increased pressure in the portal vein (portal hypertension).

The Procedure

  1. Preparation:

    • Patients are typically sedated to ensure comfort during the procedure.
    • A thorough endoscopic evaluation is performed to locate and assess the varices.
  2. Endoscopy:

    • A flexible endoscope equipped with a camera and light is gently inserted through the mouth and advanced down the esophagus.
    • The endoscope has a specialized attachment for deploying small rubber bands.
  3. Band Ligation:

    • The endoscopist identifies the varices and uses the banding device to place rubber bands around the base of each varix.
    • This action cuts off the blood supply to the varices, causing them to shrink and eventually fall off.
  4. Post-Procedure Care:

    • Patients are monitored briefly after the procedure to check for any immediate complications.
    • Specific dietary recommendations and activity restrictions may be provided to aid recovery.
Benefits of Variceal Band Ligation
  • Minimally Invasive: VBL is a non-surgical, endoscopic procedure, resulting in less pain and a quicker recovery.
  • Effective: It significantly reduces the risk of variceal bleeding, improving patient safety and quality of life.
  • Repeatable: VBL can be performed multiple times if needed to manage recurrent varices.
  • Quick Recovery: Most patients can resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
Potential Risks and Complications

While VBL is generally safe, some potential risks include:

  • Sore throat or discomfort post-procedure
  • Ulceration at the banding site
  • Rare cases of bleeding or perforation
  • Recurrence of varices, necessitating further treatments
